HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMMUNITY SERVICES - 01/16/2003 - COMMUNITY SERVICES MINUTES ELK GROVE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES Thursday, January 16, 2003 Conference Room C - Lower Level Municipal Building Board Members Present: Board Members Absent: Teresa Anesinis Stacey Bechtold Nancy Czarnik Jim Foss Anne Feichter Fred Hossfeld Mary Hale Tony Kees James Morrill Mary Paliganoff Desmond Raftery Staff Present Mike Tuozzo Linda Blair Peg Vallillo Michael Cavallini Call to Order: Mary Hale, president, called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. ® Action Items: The minutes from the November 20, 2002 meeting were approved after a motion by Peg Vallillo and a second by Jim Morrill. Coordinator's Report: Given by Linda Blair Community Service distributed holiday baskets to 35 families and 14 seniors. DC Exports on Devon adopted all of the seniors, purchasing every item on the "wish list" prepared for the seniors by the management of Village Grove and Landmeier Station. United Airlines adopted a family of nine children. Salvation Army bell ringing collected $3,375.91. This year only 40% of the funds collected will return to Elk Grove Village. Committee Reports: Community Spirit Committee: Given by Jim Morrill No nominees for the Spirit Award have been received since November 22. The committee used to receive 5 to 10 nominations each month. It is time to review the purpose of this committee. The attention of the community is now on the Character Counts award. New Business: Mike Cavallini distributed a copy of the new Community Service budget. It is 9% lower than the previous budget. The new Community Service budget was approved after a motion by Tony Kees and a second by Jim Morrill. ® Page 2 A Nominating Committee was formed to select new officers for the Community Service Board. Linda Blair, Mary Paliganoff and Des Raftery will serve on this committee. Community Service Board members conducted a brainstorming session for the purpose of developing activities for 2003. The session began with a review of the Board's purpose and history. Projects that began with the Community Service Board include the Parade, the Blood Drive, Make A Difference Day and the Farmer's Market. There was a lengthy brainstorming discussion reviewing possible projects for 2003. The following list summarizes the discussion topics. It was agreed that the brainstorming would continue at the February meeting of the Community Service Board. e Domestic Violence e Teen Violence e Community Spirit Award e Board members as eyes and ears of the community e Community Needs Assessment e Farmer's Market e Community Garage Sale e Child Abuse e Dept. of Missing and Exploited Children, Washington D.C., packets in English and Spanish with do's and don'ts for school age children e Sexual Abuse e Crisis among families e How to assist your neighbor in need e Celebrate your community e Senior population needs a pool of volunteers for tasks such as grocery shopping, shoveling snow, calling someone e Respite care for residents caring for an ill spouse or family member e Youth involvement in the community e Volunteer activity during the day, evening, night hours during the week & weekends Create a community of volunteers e Liability issues for volunteers e Schaumburg Handyman Directory without liability e People volunteer for a project they relate to; people need to get excited about something e Delivering books to shut-ins and providing companionship at the same time e Identifying families who need help immediately e Community doesn't realize this group exists (Community Service Board) Trustee Report: Given by Nancy Czarnik At the last Village Board of Trustees meeting the Lion's Club donated $500 from the fireworks fund. It was agreed by the Village Board to donate this money to the Community Service office. Page 3 Board Members Report: Tony Kees said the Booster Club is having a fashion show at the Elk Grove High School on March 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost is $10 for dinner and the fashion show. It was agreed that Marty Vela will not contact Board members to confirm attendance at the monthly Board meeting. Board members will contact Marty if they are unable to attend. Announcement The next Community Service Board meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2003 in Conference Room C in the Lower Level of the Municipal Building (Village Hall). Adiournment: A motion for adjournment was made by Mary Paliganoff and seconded by Tony Kees. Coordinator's Report: Given by Linda Blair There was a revision to the departmental budget for Fiscal Year 2003-2004 after it was reviewed by Village Manager Gary Parrin. Linda distributed a copy of this budget revision. Community Service nominated Bedelia Brant from Alexian Brothers for the 2003 Sheriff's Medal of Honor Award. Linda distributed an updated fist of the Community Service Board of Directors. Linda is exploring the idea of having an awards dinner for Elk Grove Village volunteers, similar to the dinners for volunteers in Mt. Prospect, Kenneth Young Center and Alexian Brothers Medical Center. One possibility under consideration is eliminating the award for Volunteer of the Year at the annual village dinner in April and presenting this award at the separate dinner. Committee Reports: Community Spirit Committee: Given by Linda Blair for Jim Morrill There was a meeting of the committee on January 29. The next meeting is scheduled for the third Wednesday in March. The two new members of the committee are enthusiastic. Six or seven Community Spirit tapings for Channel 6 are scheduled. Nancy Czarnik reported the Village Board of Trustees has agreed to make presentations of the Community Spirit Award at Village Board meetings. New Business: None reported. Old Business: No nominations for officers of the Community Service Board of Directors have been received. There was a continuation of the brainstorming discussion reviewing possible projects for 2003. The following list summarizes the discussion topics. • Paint white lines on gutters to assist older residents driving at night • Orange Alert— Something from the Village regarding emergency preparedness in the event of an attack, similar to the ready.gov website announced by Homeland Security • Channel 6 programming —working with the Information Committee of the Village Board of Trustees; focusing on residents needing assistance, volunteer opportunities • Improved transportation; better communication about the PACE Dial-A-Ride system areas of operation and subsidized taxi service where PACE is not available • Issues involved with developing a program of volunteer resources; coordination, awareness of volunteer's abilities, legal issues, background checks, barter program of services, private contract between the volunteer and the resident, matching the volunteer or resource with the resident requesting assistance Linda Blair will write a letter for the Village newsletter asking residents what they want to see from Community Service. Suggestion boxes will be placed in locations around Elk Grove Village to allow residents to identify what the community wants from Community Service. Trustee Report: Given by Nancy Czarnik The Youth Commission is considering becoming a subcommittee of the Community Service Board again. This will be reviewed after a presentation by Village Trustee Chris Prochno. The Grand Marshall of the 2003 parade will be the Lions & Lioness Club. Board Members Report: Mary Hale reported that leftover clothes donated to PADS are delivered to a sister church of Christus Victor Lutheran Church located in Chicago.
