Cavallim, Director of Health & Conmmmnity Services Linda Blair, Community Services Coordinator Jane Sloger, Community Health Nurse • Call To Order Chairman Jim Christie called the meeting to order at 7:03 PM. Action Items: Approval of the Minutes There was a motion by Mike Tuozzo to approve the minutes of the January 17, 2007 meeting, second by Dr. John Kelly. The minutes were unanimously approved. Community Nurse's Report After a brief introduction, Jane Sloger, Community Health Nurse presented a power point overview of her duties. Jane's role as Community Health Nurse is to assess, plan, implement and evaluate services as they relate to public health nursing. Jane has oversight in the following programs: • Childhood immunization clinics • TB clinics • Flu clinics • Day care inspections • Home visits/referrals Jane also conducts screenings at the Elk Grove Senior Center, Village Grove Apts. and Landmeier Station. Jane's outside activities in local public health support groups and agencies help her to keep abreast of current and changing public health nursing programs. Jane also addresses the needs of employees through OSHA respiratory review for the police department, employee wellness program, and administration of flu shots to employees. In addition, Jane has played an integral part in the Village Emergency Pharmaceutical Distribution Plan. At the January meeting Dr. Labinsky questioned why blood sugar screenings has declined over the last couple of years. Jane explained that blood sugar screenings by themselves do no good unless there is follow through. Many of the seniors she sees at the screenings are already under doctor's care, and are being screened on a regular basis and/or provided with required treatment. Department Director's Report Anti-Smoking Campaign Logo and poster slogan contest. The Director announced the school winners of the Smoke Free Elk Grove logo contest and poster slogan contests. About 140 poster entries were submitted. Village employees judged the top entries. Winning entries were judged in two categories, 4-5 grade and 6-8 grade. Winners in the 4-5 grade category were all from Queen-of-flee-Rosary. Students from Mead Junior High School and Grove Junior High won in the 6-8 grade level. Tlie Mayor and Village Board had chosen the logo winners in January. All winning entries were Elk Grove High School students. The logo will be used in all Smoke Free Elk Grove promotions. The winning entry for the logo contest will be awarded a$750.00 scholarship. All other eight _ winners will receive gift certificates. The winners were originally scheduled to receive their awards at the February 13`s Village Board meeting, but have delayed until March 13"'due to inclement weather. Smoking Cessation On January 23"', Jim Christie and the Director met with Kathy White a smoking cessation facilitator. Kathy has 20 years experience teaching smoking cessation programs. Kathy utilizes the Lung Association Freedoin frour Smoking Program. The program runs 6-7 weeks. Tine Village would pick up a majority or all the costs associated with the program. Kathy is also proposing hosting two smoker support group meetings prior to the commencement of the cessation program. Smoke Free Forum On February 27"', Mayor Johnson will be hosting a Smoke Free Forum. All restaurant owners/operators are being invited to present their ideas and suggestions on how to best advertise and promote smoke free dining in Elk Grove.The information gathered at the forum will be used to advertise Elk Grove restaurants in the various media venues. The Village did run an ad in the Daily Herald prior to the Super Bowl. Health Risk Assessment Health & Community Services and Human Resources are planning to provide a health risk assessment to the employees sometime this spring. ABMC will be providing the services to the Village. The program will kick-off with an employee health fair that will provide hands on screening, followed up by an on-line survey. Community Blood Drive At the January 27"' Community Blood Drive, 41 pints of blood were collected. The next blood drive is scheduled for April 28"'. Compendium The Director provided a brief overview of the Department's 2006 activities. A copy of the 2006 Compendium was distributed to the Board. Some of the activities highlighted were: • 15%increase in environmental health activities • 11% increase in food establislunent inspections • 11% decrease in blood donations M • 1.6% increase in solid waste disposal and a 9.7% increase in recycling • 1% decrease in Community Service information and referral contacts • 1% increase in the number of families assisted and a 3% increase in $ amount of assistance • 3% increase in nursing activities. Department Budget The Director provided a copy of the 2007-2008 Department Budget to the Board. The Director has requested several capital items including a replacement Village vehicle, three new computers, and two new fax/copier/printers. The Village Manager has approved the preliminary budget proposal. The Mayor and Village Board will review and approve the final budget proposal in March. Flu Vaccine 2007-2008 Flu vaccine has already been pre-booked for the 2007-2008 flu season. Flu vaccine has been ordered from two suppliers. This will Hopefully ensure the Village has an adequate supply in time to provide the shots on a preplarmed schedule.Flu vaccine for the 2006-2007 season is still available. The Department still has an inventory of vaccine on hand. Village Complex Reconstruction The Village will be constricting a new police administration building.-.The current police department building(old Village Hall) will be demolished, and a new two story building with underground parking built in its place. Health & Connnrwity Services will be moved into the new building on the ground floor. The new building is scheduled to be occupied by April 2009. AVERT Health & Community Services is exploring the formation of a volunteer corps to be used during a community-wide emergency. The All Volunteer Emergency Support Team (AVERT) would be recruited from Village residents, and trained to help assist with the emergency duties of the Department. They would be most useful if the Pharmaceutical Distribution Plan had to be implemented. The Community Health Nurse is also exploring the use of volunteers in an emergency situation. The Volunteer Medical Corps would be recruited from residents with a medical background. Mike Tuozzo and Jim Morrill would like to assist the Department with recruitment of the AVERT group. Cooanunity Service Coordinator Report Volunteer of the Year The Coordinator is seeking nominations for the Volunteer of the Year Award. Deadline-for submitting a candidate is March 16`h. Honorees are recognized with their award at the Annual Village Dinner. Rebuilding Together Rebuilding Together is a volunteer group that provides home repairs for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities. Services will be provided throughout the northwest suburbs on May 5"'. Linda Blair is the chairman of the board of directors. Applications to apply for assistance were accepted until February 15`x'. Twenty (20) applications were received.
