Department Director's Report
Anti-Smoking Campaign

have been delivered to the elementary schools and juniorhigh school representatives. The contest runs
until April 30`11. The winning entries will be picked in May, with awards going to the top tluee entries.
The mascot will be used in promotional events and activities,
Smoking Cessation
The Director and board Chairman Jim Christie met with representatives from Kenneth Young Centers.
Laura Larson and Michelle Hohe are part of the In 'Touch program.Li Touch is a management system
that oversees 18 regional community based prevention provider agencies. Laura and Michelle
developed a smoking survey that will be used by the Village to develop an effective'smoking cessation
program. The survey will be promoted in the Village Newsletter. The survey will be on the Village
Smoke Free Elk Grove website. Residents that fill out the survey will be entered into a raffle to win a
free dinner.
Smoke Free Foram
On March 27" the Mayor held a follow up Smoke Free Elk Grove Fortran with local restaurants and
entertainment providers. At the meeting the Village provided a number of advertising and promotional.
ideas as an outgrowth of the February meeting. Some of the ideas presented were; Comcast
commercials, promotional flyers in the newspaper, and mascot contest (see above). Food
establishments will also be promoted in the Villager Newsletter in a"Support Those That Support Us"
campaign. A follow up meeting is scheduled for a later date.
Smoke Free Website
The Director is exploring a direct access to the Smoke Free Elk Grove website. This will allow
residents to have direct access instead of going through the Elk Grove Village website. Once approved
it should take two to three days to be up aid running.
Compact Fluorescent Lights '
• Three Elk Grove High School students and their teacher have proposed a program to promote the
purchase and use of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL). Called "A Thousand Points of Environmental
Light", the program would bring the high school, Village, and Wal-mart together in a public-private
partnership to provide CFLs to residents at a discounted price. The program would provide Village
residents with a $3.00 coupon off the price of a three pack CFL purchase.
. One problem with CFLs is that they do contain small amounts of mercury. The Director has contacted
a.fluorescent bulb recycles-who will recycle bulbs collected from Village residents. Residents bringing
in a CFL for recycling would receive an additional coupon to purchase CFLs at Wal-Mart.
Medication Drop-off
The medication drop-off program has hit a snag. The contract hired by S WANCC to pick up and
destroy the medications was not aware or made and incorrect assumption that narcotics or controlled
substances can just be dropped off with proper security measures. The DEA requires that when any
controlled substance is brought in, a police officer trust be present to oversee the handling and storage.
Since we do not know when those substances may be brought in it would be disrupting to police
operations. Therefore, the Director recommended that medication drop off is limited to once a month
for a determined period of time. Sharps (needles, lancets) will also be accepted.
Health risk Assessment
Approximately 50 village employees participated in the health risk assessment screenings conducted .
by ABMC on April 10°' and 12th. After a battery of tests the employees were provided with their
personal health information. In May employees will be asked to complete an e-mail survey. The tow
parts will be used to evaluate the employee's total health risk.
CERT Volunteers
On April 20"' the Department will be meeting with the Police and Fire Departments and Public Works
to discuss the creation of a corps of volunteers that will be activated during a time of disaster or
emergency situation. Monies have been budgeted by the Fire Department to recruit and train citizen
volunteer corps. The Department is interested in recruiting volunteers to assist during a disaster or
activation of the phanmaceutical distribution plan.
i
Table Top Exercise
On April 26" the Village will be participating in a fall scale exercise to test the Cook County
Department of Public Health Pharmaceutical Stockpile Distribution Plan for first responders. The test
will validate procedures and ultimately reveal if corrective action is needed in the plan. The test will
not require set tip of the emergency operations center.

practical work to finish her studies
