Harper College Presentation on Plan to Maintain & Improve Campus Infrastructure
H. Zoldak provided an informational presentation on the efforts of Harper College to plan for the
future by modernizing facilities to better train skilled workers, maintaining existing campus
infrastructure, and adding a new building to facilitate collaboration and innovation. This capital
plan was developed as part of a community -driven plan for the college's future undertaken as part
of Harper's 50`h Anniversary.
The new building will establish a business resource center, act as a center to help residents keep
current for today's workplace, and house the University Center partnerships that allow Harper to
offer 4-year degrees in high -demand fields.
Harper College placed a referendum on the November ballot, which allows voters to make the
decision on whether to approve an investment in the proposed capital program for the future of
Harper College. The proposed capital program would not increase taxes. It would renew an
existing bond issue, which was issued in 2000 and is due to be paid off in 2020.
In 2020, if the bond issue was not renewed, property taxes would decrease by approximately $23
for the owner of a $250,000 house. If voters approve this new bond issue, those taxes would stay
at the same level and the college would be able to raise an estimated $180 million without raising
taxes.
The Committee thanked H. Zoldak for coming out to share information on this initiative and
expressed appreciation for the great value Harper College has provided to the community.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:52 p.m.
