GROUND FEEDING
Chairman Lissner called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m. The Committee met to
discuss the possibility of amending the Village ordinance that prohibits ground feeding of
animals. Mr. & Mrs. Galassi provided a brief historical overview of an issue they have
experienced over the years with their neighbor who routinely ground-fed peanuts to
squirrels. They concluded that the squirrels that were being fed were causing damage
to their lawn and garden. Mr. Galassi added that the Village had advised him that there
was nothing that could be done to resolve this problem.
Mr. Trudan explained that this conclusion was misleading and that the Village staff was
very successful in obtaining compliance by issuing notices of violations and fines. He
added that the Village was unsuccessful only when such cases are prosecuted in court.
Mr. Galassi advised the Committee that the problem appears to be resolved as the
neighbor has discontinued filling her "squirrel feeder" for the last 2-3 weeks. The
Galassis indicated that they have experienced significantly less squirrel activity in their
back yard.
The Committee discussed the intent of the ordinance and how it pertained to the varied
types of animals that are common in the Village. The final consensus of the Committee
was to discuss the matter with other Village officials before making a recommendation to
schedule a future JPZ or Committee of the Whole meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 4'.50 P.M.
