Pursuant to a duly made and approved motion and a majority vote at a regularly scheduled meeting

The Fire Chief explained that following the retirement of the Village Nurse, Michael Sharp
absorbed the Village Nurse's responsibilities into his position. Chief Mikel stated that the Fire
Department has not received many calls for services the nurse formerly provided, but that they
were able to successfully refer all of those calls to other resources in the community. In
particular, Michael Sharp followed up with Senior Support Services after referrals and
understood they were able to help everyone who has been referred to them.
The Board discussed how the Fire Department was reaching out to seniors in the community to
ensure awareness of available resources. The Village Nurse had performed services such as
blood pressure checks as a way to keep in contact with seniors. The Board discussed the need
for continuity of service for seniors, so that they know who to contact with questions and have
someone to guide them through services offered by various organizations.
The Fire Chief stated that Michael Sharp will be able to provide continuity of contact for seniors,
and he will get out into the community to become better known and more familiar with seniors
who may need assistance. The Board requested that Michael Sharp also follow up with seniors
to see how the referrals work.
The Board also discussed other services that were provided by the Village Nurse, such as
checking medications, and discussed whether this type of service should be provided by the
Village. This type of service is typically provided through required follow-ups after hospital
stays, but Manor Care does not do follow-ups.
The Fire Chief stated that there are existing resources in the Fire Department, such as the public
education team, which can do more outreach to seniors in the community. Blood pressure
checks would be a part of this. The Fire Chief is already scheduled to speak at the Senior Center
in May.
The Board suggested that outreach to seniors include visits to the Senior Center and churches in
the community, as well as to senior housing complexes such as Village Grove and Landmeier
Station. Additionally, it was mentioned that seniors read the Village newsletter and their church
bulletins.
The consensus of the Board was to have the Fire Chief develop and implement a proactive
outreach plan. The Board requested that the Fire Chief keep them appraised of the progress of
the outreach, and come back to the Village Board in June to discuss how the plan is going.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:18 p.m.
