HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTION - 20-87 - 3/24/1987 - CALLING ON ICC/REJECT COMED'S INCREASERESOLUTION NO. 20-87 A RESOLUTION CALLING ON THE ICC TO REJECT COMMONWEALTH EDISON'S PROPOSAL FOR THE LARGEST RATE INCREASE IN ILLINOIS HISTORY WHEREAS, fair and affordable electric rates are essential for the economic well-being of both residential and business consumers in our community; and WHEREAS, the Illinois General Assembly has granted the Illinois Commerce Commission with the authority and the responsibility to assure fair and reasonable electric rates; and WHEREAS, Commonwealth Edison is the largest supplier of electricity to consumers in northern Illinois, and Edison has been granted nine rate increases in the last thirteen years, and these increases have totaled over 2.8 billion dollars in higher rates to consumers during that period; and WHEREAS, groups representing Illinois consumers are currently involved in a number of proceedings before the Illinois Commerce Commission which may result in significant rate reductions and refunds for Commonwealth Edison customers; and WHEREAS, Commonwealth Edison has asked the Commission to suspend these proceedings involving potential savings of billions of dollars to utility consumers and has requested that the Commission order the largest rate in- crease ever in just nine weeks, and Edison has made this request despite the opposition of every consumer group involved in rate case proceedings before the Commission; and WHEREAS, the issues involved are extremely complex, with rate cases typically requiring eleven months of investigation, analysis and deliberation; and WHEREAS, the interests of business and residential consumers in our community are being seriously compromised by suspension of current proceedings and the unreasonably swift consideration of Edison's request for an increase; and WHEREAS, the decision made by the Commission in this case will have a profound effect on the level of electric rates for the next twenty years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Elk Grove Village, Cook and DuPage Counties, Illinois as follows: Section 1. That the Village of Elk Grove Village memorializes the Illinois Commerce Commission to reject Commonwealth Edison's proposal for the largest rate increase in Illinois history. Section 2. That the Village of Elk Grove Village memorializes the Illinois Commerce Commission to avail itself of the full amount of time granted by the Illinois General Assembly for the thorough and complete examination of any rate increase proposal. Section That the Village Clerk is hereby directed to prepare and send a copy of this Resolution to the Chairman of the Illinois Commerce Sect! q .
