MINUTES YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 1999 COUNCIL CHAMBERS In attendance: Tom Cooke Brian Keyworth Barb Lahtinen Marian Noehre Chris Prochno Ashley Taylor Absent: Pat Feichter Brittany Marques Mike Urban The meeting came to order at 8:00 a.m. Results of the Parade Float Contest were shared. The first place plaque for the Youth Commission Float was passed around. The Commission decided to participate in the parade again next year. Chris will have a plaque made up for Meyer Materials. The Commission will participate in the Community Paint-A-Thon on September 18, 1999. The Commission will participate in the PADS Walk on Make A Difference Day on October 23, 1999. The Youth Commission would like to organize a canned food drive in conjunction with the walk. Chris will contact Beth Madden about coordinating the effort. The Commission discussed involvement in Suicide Prevention Week. It was decided that the Commission will pass on participating this year. However, they wish to obtain more information on the program for possible participation next year. The Commission also decided to do food baskets for needy community families for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. We;will help fund the baskets with money donated to the Commission from the Lion's Club. The Commission discussed the possibility of sponsoring a Youth Summit again. The date of Saturday, March 4, 2000 was selected as a date. The Commission also decided to participate in the"Happy Memories" shopping trip in November. Some new ideas that were discussed included: 1. Establishing a scholarship for graduating seniors. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of involvement within the community. 2. Trying to secure a spot in the library display case to highlight Youth Commission projects. 3. Creating a picture album showing the events the Commission has participated in. 4. Meeting with the new Youth Coordinator for the Park District to establish some shared events. We will invite her to our next meeting. 5. Putting out a flyer at Mead Junior High and Queen of the Rosary schools to seek a student representative on the Commission. 6. Creating a Certificate of Participation for members of the Youth Commission. The meeting was adjourned at 9:08 a.m. The next meeting will be conducted on Saturday, September 11, 1999 at 8:00 a.m. in the Chernick Conference Room.
