A notation of the misspelling of Teresa Anesinis's name in the February minutes is dutifully noted. Coordinator's Report: Given by Linda Blair The office finished Easter Adopt a Family with the distribution of Easter meals for 33 families. Marty, the Community Service Clerk, has been out for a couple of weeks due to a medical leave. Coordinator Blair has been doing Medicare Part D,which is the prescription drug program that came out in January. Many other social services agencies have been busy assisting seniors, so the Community Service Office has been helping out. Eligible participants are supposed to be signed up for this program by May 15`h Mike Cavallini announced that there is not much change in this year's budget, funding is maintaining at the present level. We still have money to fund the plaques for the volunteer of the year awards and the Community Spirit fund continues. Ifthere are any questions, see Mike Cavallini. He will bring a copy of the budget to the next meeting. If anyone has questions about the anti-smoking ordinance that begins January 1, 2007, contact Mr. Cavallini. All restaurants, bars and businesses will be smoke free by January 1, 2007. Smoking is prohibited 10 feet from any entrance to these establishments. Rotary Fest will have a smoking area set aside for 2007. Starting June 1, all licenses for anyone selling tobacco will increase from$100 to $5,000 for a large establishment such as Jewel. The fee will increase to $1,000 for a small store such as a gas station. Possible uses for the increased revenue from the licensing increase include: One use—Promote the Village as a Smoke Free Community Two—One third would go to education of society about the hazards of smoking and second hand smoke Three— Smoking Sensation Programs, which would be run by organizations such as the American Cancer Society, American Medical Association, and Alexian Brothers. Nothing is final yet. There was a free Stroke Screening Service offered by Alexian Brothers at the village. Unfortunately, very few people knew about this. Trustee Czarnik said that looking at ® ways to promote programs in the village is always an ongoing issue. Even though Mayor Johnson announced the screening and a flyer went out to Village residents, there still was a low response. Regarding the Bird Flu epidemic, Director Cavallini stated that there is not much of a worry in the United States for the Bird Flu. Most birds migrate up to Alaska and along the California coast, so there is no immediate concern for Elk Grove Village. New Business: Mary Paliganoff learned that some communities offer a yearly pickup where any large trash items can be put out on the curb and picked up. Director Cavaltini said that this program hasn't been put into place because Waste Management already collects large items. President Morrill discussed bringing the Community Preparedness program to Elk Grove Village. President Morrill saw Tom Skilling on Channel 9 in a segment on"Is Your Community Ready?" People usually don't know what to do during so severe storms. The National Weather Service has a "Storm Ready"program that communities can sign up for if certain eligibility requirements have been met. The National Weather Service would come out and train residents to be storm spotters, • learn how to handle communications in emergencies, learn how to protect residents in the heat, etc. More information is available at www.nws.noa.gov The National Weather Service has people willing to come out and present to help us prepare. Trustee Czarnik says that we have a pretty good weather program, but the weather service could help. Trustee Czarnik and Georgia Landt suggested that the program offered by the NWS could be used in the programming on Channel 6 to educate residents about emergencies. Coordinator Blair said that the village has recently updated all disaster planning. The Community Service office is responsible for mass sheltering. The Health Department is responsible for sanitation. When updating the plan, the village felt that things should be looked at in light of what has happened in the past year (hurricane response). In the event of a disaster in Elk Grove the Community Service Board members may be called upon to man shelters, so Coordinator Blair thought that it would be helpful to have training. Some board members received the training in 1998,but things have been updated since that time. The board agreed that this type of training would be beneficial for all. Coordinator Blair will check with the Red Cross to set up training. Again, the board and President Morrill will look into having someone come in from the National Weather Service. Old Business: A representative from Safe From the Start will address the board at the May meeting, It was again mentioned that the Elk Grove Village Community Service Board's mission is education in 2006. Sheila Webb has been named the Volunteer of the Year. She will be attending the village dinner with Mary Hale, as her guest. The Senior Medal of Honor winner could not attend the presentation in the city, so it will be made at the May Village Board Meeting.
