This date marks the amoral American Cancer Society's, Great American Suaoke Out. The Director has set up a table in the Village Hall atrium with anti-smoking and smoking cessation information to kick off the campaign. Elk Grove High School will be holding Great American Smoke Out activities outside the cafeteria. The Village purchased water bottles to be handed out to students pledging to remain smoke free. Channel 6 will be filming the EGHS activities. These will be added to a full- length feature on the new ordinance and the harmful effects of smoking to be aired next year. The Director has purchased Quit Kits from the American lung Association to be used for the various anti-smoking programs to be implemented during the next year. Additional programs will be phased in leading up to 01/01/07. There will be an anti-smoking slogan poster contest for elementary students and the logo to be designed by high school students. The program will also pay to train EGHS students in a train-the-trainer program entitled Teens Against Tobacco Use (TA TU). These students will talk to elementary students on • the harmful effects of smoking. The Director also provided a copy of the proclamation recognizing November 16`' as the American Cancer Society's, Great American Smoke Out Day in the Village. Environmental Health Inspectors Kiisten Gonsur and Christine Czemeeki spoke to the Board about the duties of the Environmental Health Inspectors (EHI). Their major focus is food establishment inspections, but they also conduct in service programs and onsite training in food establishments as well. Kristen performs pool inspections and Christine conducts institutional (nursing homes, day care centers, etc.) inspections. They also conduct a variety of other environmental inspections, such as garbage and grass and weed complaints. The EHIs would like to initiate a program were high-risk restaurants that score a 90% or higher are recognized by awarding them.a certificate of excellence. Mr. Pace asked what would happen if a food establishment fell out of compliance, but still displayed a certificate. Kristen Gonsur stated that the certificates would be issued for the prior year only, and the food establishment would not be eligible for a new certificate. A question was asked about the inspection frequency. Inspections are based on risk. A low risk establishment is inspected at least once a year, a medium risk twice a year, and a high risk three times a year. If a follow up inspection is needed it is usually conducted within ten days. Mr. Scholten asked about the conditions at the Pizza Hut. The restaurant has been in a hearing for non-compliance because of continuing low scores. At the hearing the food establishment signs a contract not to repeat any critical violations for a one-year probationary period. If any . critical violations are found the establishment may be closed for a twenty-four hour period. A score of 60 or below is cause for an immediate closure of any food establishment. The EHI's will allow a business to stay open if critical violations can be corrected immediately. The. establishment is then given an adjusted score and allowed to continue operation. Mr. Christie asked if upper management is made aware of these issues. They are notified but because of high turn over in the business they are not always aware of problems at the local level. Mr. Tuozzo asked about the fine schedules. A P-ticket is similar to a parking ticket and is $50.00. A LO-ticket requires the violator to appear in court and could run up to $500.00. Sweet Baby Ray's and Southern Belle's Pancake House will be opening in the next couple of weeks. Flu Vaccine The Department now has 1,410 doses of influenza vaccine. 300 more should arrive next week. This should be more than enough to handle the current demand for flu shots. Because of the projected lower demand for flu shots the Director will be cutting back on the current order of flu vaccine. Presently two clinics are scheduled. The first on the November 28°i from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Village Hall and on the 30°i from 1:00 to 3:00 at the library. The Director will also schedule an additional clinic in December to reduce the current inventory. There will also be a children's flu clinic on December 5`h at the Fox Run Golf Course. All first responders have been immunized. The remaining employee population will be provided with flu shots on November 16`h.
