RESOLUTION NO. 8-73
A RESOLUTION IN MEMORIAM OF PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN , 1884-1972
HE DONE HIS DAMNDEST
WHEREAS , it is customary to resort: to official bureaucratic language in
a resolution, and
WHEREAS, Harry S Truman by character and instinct rebelled from the
pompous, the superficial and the artificial .
NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED that we, the citizens of the Village of
Elk Grove Village, Illinois , will speak from our hearts, direct and to
the point , as he, Harry S Truman„ would forever prefer.
Twenty seven years ago the man from Independence was thrust into the most
powerful and awesome office in the world. By dint of fate the reins of
leadership of the free world were thrust into his hands. The domestic
skeptics and political opponents predicted chaos and confusion.
But history now has another story to tell to the credit and everlasting
glory of one American from the Mid-West . We remember so well his cour-
ageous stand at Potsdam, his resolution and sheer guts in breaking the
blockade of Berlin , the aid to Greece and Turkey, the Point Four Program,
the Marshall Plan, his role in the then embryonic formation of the United
Nations.
But transcending all of that was his decision to fight for what was right
and not expedient in Korea. He wevered not , nor was he swayed by the hue
and outcry over the relief of General MacArthur. He reaffirmed the consti -
tutional right of the Commanders in Chief to relieve a subordinate.
Mr. Truman, ours is a small Villace in your beloved Mid-West. We too re-
present in our own small way the hearts and guts of America. No greater
honor could befall us than to produce a leader in your image who will say
"the buck stops here" and make it stick. All men see in you something of
what they would like to be and yeern for courage to "tell it like it is''
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the President and Board of Trustees of the
Village of Elk Grove Village , Counties of Cook and DuPage, State of Illinois ,
that this resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its
passage and approval according to law.
PASSED this 23rd day of January 1973.
APPROVED this 23rdday ofJanuary 1973.
Village Pre 61ent
ATTEST:
Village Clerk
